Hyphessobrycon sweglesi
Also known as: Red Phantom Tetra, Swegles' Tetra
Origin: Colombia, Venezuela (Orinoco basin)
Hyphessobrycon sweglesi, commonly called the Red Phantom Tetra, originates from the Orinoco basin in Colombia and Venezuela. Its body is translucent pink-red with a striking black shoulder spot and red-tipped fins, creating an ethereal appearance under soft aquarium lighting. Males are slimmer with more intensely colored fins, while females display a fuller body profile. This species performs best in blackwater-style setups with tannin-stained water, dried leaves, and abundant plant cover. Its peaceful nature and compatibility with other small South American fish make it a popular choice for biotope enthusiasts. It accepts a varied diet of small live, frozen, and dry foods.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic water; pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 23–28 °C. Tannins from driftwood or Indian almond leaves enhance color. Tank: 50 L minimum; dark substrate, dense planting, and floating plants to diffuse light. Gentle filtration preferred. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts flake, micro-pellet, frozen cyclops, daphnia, and baby brine shrimp. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; condition with live foods, spawn in very soft acidic water over fine plants. Eggs light-sensitive; darken tank. Compatibility: Peaceful with other small tetras, dwarf cichlids, and calm catfish. Avoid boisterous or large tankmates.
