Moenkhausia lepidura
Origin: Guiana Shield, South America
Moenkhausia lepidura is a slender, attractive tetra from the Guiana Shield, recognized by a bold dark pigmented stripe along the caudal peduncle that extends conspicuously into the lower lobe of the tail, giving it a distinctive swordtail-like silhouette. Its clean patterning and hardy constitution make it an excellent community fish, and its schooling behavior adds movement and depth to the aquascape. A more unusual tetra that makes a rewarding alternative to commonly kept species.
Maintain in groups of 6 or more for natural schooling. Provide a planted tank with open swimming space and moderate flow. Feed a varied diet of quality flake, pellets, and frozen foods including Artemia and bloodworm. Tolerant of a range of water parameters; prefers slightly soft, mildly acidic water for best coloration.
