Heptapterus sympterygium
Also known as: Sympterygium Heptapterus
Origin: Subtropical South America
Heptapterus sympterygium is native to rivers of southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina, occupying clear, cool, fast-flowing reaches. Its name refers to the near-fusion of the adipose fin with the caudal fin, a morphological feature shared with several heptapterids from swift-water habitats.
In the aquarium it requires similar conditions to H. mustelinus — cool, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong flow and a clean, smooth-substrate tank. It is a peaceful, gentle species entirely suitable for cool-water South American community setups.
The Sympterygium Heptapterus is an obscure species rarely traded outside specialist circles, but it makes a rewarding and unusual alternative to more commonly available catfish for hobbyists interested in subtropical South American biotopes.
Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness; well-oxygenated with good current. Tank: Minimum 150L; smooth substrate, rocks and wood, moderate-strong circulation. Feeding: Omnivore; small sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp. Breeding: No captive breeding documented. Compatibility: Peaceful; cool-water South American community fish.
