Melanotaenia synergos
Also known as: Synergos Rainbowfish
Origin: Papua New Guinea (Strickland River)
Melanotaenia synergos is an elegant rainbowfish from the Strickland River system of Papua New Guinea, and is seldom seen in mainstream hobby channels. It is a species that displays a particularly attractive bi-coloured effect in dominant males — the anterior body and head carry a deep blue-green iridescence while the posterior body, dorsal surface, and fins blaze with vivid orange to scarlet. The transition between the two colour zones creates a particularly clean and dramatic contrast.
This species is not as well-established in captivity as some other New Guinean rainbowfish and dedicated hobbyists who maintain it are performing a genuine service to rainbowfish diversity. Care requirements are typical for a mid-sized New Guinean Melanotaenia — moderately hard, slightly alkaline water, good oxygenation, and a spacious planted aquarium. The bi-colour pattern is most vivid in fish maintained in excellent condition.
Melanotaenia synergos breeds in the standard egg-scattering manner. Its relatively small captive population in the hobby makes maintaining pure strains important. It is most commonly available through specialist hobbyist breeders within the rainbowfish community rather than commercial importers.
Water: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 23–28°C, moderately hard; premium water quality maintains the bi-colour pattern. Tank: Minimum 150 L; planted with open midwater zone; moderate flow. Feeding: Quality flake and pellets; live and frozen foods several times per week for colour intensity. Breeding: Egg scatterer on fine plants or mops; source from and distribute to reputable hobbyists. Compatibility: Peaceful community species; best with other New Guinean rainbowfish.
