Vieja synspila
Also known as: Synspilum Cichlid, Redhead Cichlid, Quetzal Cichlid, Firehead Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Vieja synspila, the Redhead Cichlid or Quetzal Cichlid, is found in rivers of southern Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. It is a large, robust cichlid with an exceptionally colourful body displaying an intricate mosaic of red, orange, green, and yellow across the flanks, with mature males developing a red-orange head blush and a pronounced nuchal hump that bears a striking resemblance to the kok of Flowerhorn hybrids — not coincidentally, as V. synspila is believed to be one of the parent species in the Flowerhorn's development.
Vieja synspila is one of the most colourful wild-type cichlids in the Americas and is highly sought after by collectors of Central American cichlids who prefer wild or F1 specimens over hybrids. It requires a large aquarium and is aggressive, especially during breeding.
For aquarists interested in the origins of the Flowerhorn, keeping V. synspila alongside a Flowerhorn or Red Texas provides an educational contrast between the wild parent and its extraordinary hybrid descendants.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard; regular large water changes essential. Tank: 500L minimum for a pair; robust rockwork; can be mixed with other large robust Central American cichlids in very large setups. Feeding: Omnivore; large cichlid pellets, frozen foods, vegetable matter; will browse algae and plant material. Breeding: Aggressive breeding pair; large open substrate spawner; both parents defend fry intensely. Compatibility: Very aggressive; best as a specimen pair in a dedicated aquarium; possible in very large Central American cichlid communities.
