Cryptoheros sajica
Also known as: T-bar Cichlid, Sajica Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Cryptoheros sajica is endemic to the Pacific slope rivers of Costa Rica, inhabiting clear, warm, and moderately fast-flowing streams. Its common name refers to the T-shaped mark formed by the intersection of a lateral stripe and a vertical bar at mid-body. Males are larger with more extended finnage, while females develop a rich orange-red suffusion on the belly when in breeding condition, making sexing straightforward.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness (GH 6–16). Tank: 100L minimum; caves and driftwood essential; pairs will claim territories at spawning time. Feeding: Omnivore; varied diet of quality pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable supplement. Behaviour: Relatively peaceful for a cichlid; pairs are devoted parents and will guard fry aggressively. Compatibility: Good with similarly sized non-aggressive fish; avoid keeping with very small or delicate species.
