Taeniacara candidi
Origin: Brazil (Rio Negro)
Taeniacara candidi is one of the most elegant and sought-after dwarf cichlids from the Rio Negro basin of Brazil, representing a monotypic genus with no close relatives in the hobby. Males are extraordinarily slender with a bold dark lateral stripe and spectacular filamentous caudal fin extensions; females are smaller and cryptically patterned. Found only in the extreme blackwater habitats of the upper Rio Negro where water is essentially distilled — extremely soft and acidic with pH as low as 3.8. Cave-spawning pairs require perfect water management and a stress-free environment.
Use RO water conditioned with peat, Indian almond leaves, and blackwater extract to achieve pH 4.0–5.5, GH 0–3, KH 0–1. Temperature 26–30°C. Gentle sponge or matten filter only — no strong flow. A mature, heavily planted biotope tank is essential. Feed live and frozen micro-prey: Drosophila, small bloodworm, micro-worms, and Artemia nauplii. One pair per tank. Do not disturb spawning; female guards the cave aggressively.
