Taeniatus Headstander

Anostomus taeniatus is an infrequently imported headstander from Venezuela's Orinoco drainage, displaying a richly detailed pattern of dark longitudinal stripes and mottled flanks accented by brilliant red in the caudal fin lobes and dorsal fin. It shares the characteristic head-down feeding posture of the genus and reaches a substantial size, making it a genuine showpiece in large display aquariums.

This species has the same care requirements as other large Anostomus: soft to moderately hard water with good flow, robust or artificial planting, and a varied plant-based diet supplemented with protein. Individuals can be assertive with conspecifics, so groups of five or more help spread any territorial interactions across the group.

For the South American biotope enthusiast, A. taeniatus offers a compelling combination of rarity, size, and striking colouration. It is best reserved for experienced aquarists who can provide the space and water quality it requires.

Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15, KH 1–8); good oxygenation. Tank: 200 L minimum; robust or artificial decor; strong flow; driftwood and smooth rocks. Feeding: Spirulina flake, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, herbivore pellets; frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive with conspecifics; peaceful towards unrelated large South American species.
