Geophagus taeniopareius is a medium-large eartheater with a black cheek band and stunning blue iridescent spots across the body. Native to the Orinoco and Apure basins of Venezuela and Colombia, it is a mouthbrooder that forms loosely cohesive groups in the wild. Provide ample sand for sifting behaviour.
Water: 26-29°C, pH 6.0-7.2, soft to slightly hard water. Tank: Minimum 300L, deep fine sand, open mid-level swimming space. Feeding: Quality sinking pellets, live and frozen bloodworm, vegetable-based foods. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; males spar but rarely cause serious injury. Compatibility: Combines well with large tetras, peaceful cichlids, and Corydoras catfish.
