Geophagus taeniopareius
Also known as: Taeniopareius Eartheater (Apure), Cheekstripe Eartheater
Origin: Venezuela (Apure, Orinoco)
Geophagus taeniopareius from the Apure River drainage is a graceful, medium-sized eartheater identified by a distinctive horizontal dark cheek stripe that runs from the eye toward the operculum. The iridescent blue-green scaling of this locality form is particularly vivid under quality aquarium lighting, and dominant males intensify dramatically during breeding condition.
Care follows the standard Geophagus approach: large tank, deep fine sand, efficient filtration, and slightly soft acidic water. The Apure system experiences seasonal variation in hardness and temperature, giving this form slightly more tolerance for moderate water parameters than strict blackwater species. Groups of five or more are ideal.
The taeniopareius eartheater is a mouthbrooder and relatively straightforward to breed once a compatible pair forms within a group. Conditioning on quality live and frozen foods before and during the breeding season greatly improves spawning success.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard (2-12 dGH); moderately adaptable for a Geophagus. Tank: Minimum 250L; deep fine sand substrate, scattered driftwood, open midwater space for group dynamics. Feeding: Sinking cichlid granules, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, quality flake as supplement. Breeding: Mouthbrooder; cheek stripe intensifies in breeding males; flat sand patches preferred spawning sites. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; suitable with medium-large tetras, peaceful cichlids, corydoras.
