Geophagus taeniopareius
Also known as: Taeniopareius Eartheater, Venezuelan Coastal Eartheater
Origin: Venezuela (Tuy, Unare, and Caribbean coastal rivers)
Geophagus taeniopareius is a lesser-known eartheater endemic to the short Caribbean coastal drainages of northern Venezuela, including the Tuy and Unare river systems. These rivers are distinct from the Orinoco basin and have produced their own endemic cichlid fauna. G. taeniopareius displays a lateral stripe reminiscent of G. grammepareius but with distinguishable differences in meristics, scale counts, and colouration. The species is a sand-sifting delayed mouthbrooder that inhabits warm, moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. In captivity it is moderately hardy and adapts well to aquarium conditions. Provide fine sand, open areas for foraging, and a group of five or more for natural social dynamics. A good choice for hobbyists interested in Venezuelan endemic cichlids.
Water: Soft to moderately soft; pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 24–29 °C. Tank: 200 L+; fine sand, open floor, driftwood optional. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, artemia. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; group of 5+ for best spawning frequency. Compatibility: Peaceful with large tetras, other eartheaters, and catfish.
