Bryconops melanurus
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
The Taillight Tetra is a slender, fast-moving tetra from the Amazon and Orinoco basins named for the vivid red spot at the base of its tail, which flashes in motion like a taillight. Reaching up to 12 cm, it is a medium-to-large tetra better suited to spacious community aquariums alongside similarly active, robust species. Groups maintain a dynamic, flowing school formation that fills the aquascape with movement.
Keep in groups of 6 or more in tanks with ample open swimming space and moderate to strong filtration. Feed quality flake, pellets, and frozen mysis, Artemia, and bloodworm. Tolerates a range of conditions but prefers soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water. Avoid housing with very small or slow-moving fish that may be intimidated by its speed.
