Hyphessobrycon takasei
Also known as: Coffee Bean Tetra, Takasei Tetra
Origin: Brazil (lower Amazon basin)
Hyphessobrycon takasei, commonly called the Coffee Bean Tetra, is a charming small species from the lower Amazon basin of Brazil. Its most identifying feature is the oval brown blotch on the mid-flank that strongly resembles a coffee bean, set against a translucent silver-cream body. This understated but elegant species is peaceful and undemanding, thriving in warm, soft water with ample plant cover. It is an ideal choice for hobbyists who prefer a more subtle aesthetic in their aquariums. Large groups of fifteen or more create a hypnotic drifting school. It readily accepts most small prepared and frozen foods.
Water: Soft, warm; pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28 °C. Slightly acidic conditions preferred. Tank: 40 L minimum; dense planting, dark substrate, gentle filtration. Floating plants help diffuse light. Feeding: Omnivore; micro-pellets, flake, frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; soft acidic warm water over fine plants. Remove adults post-spawn to protect eggs. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent community fish. Avoid boisterous or large tankmates.
