Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Origin: Captive bred
Tancho Kohaku is celebrated as one of the most prestigious and elegant koi varieties, featuring a flawlessly pure white body with a single, perfectly round red Hi (red marking) on the head — a pattern reminiscent of the Japanese red-crowned crane. The symmetry, depth of color, and circular purity of the red spot are central to its show value. Bred to high standards in Japanese and European facilities, the Tancho pattern transcends the Kohaku variety and appears in Sanke and Showa as well.
Maintain in a well-filtered pond of at least 2,000 L with strong biological and mechanical filtration and UV sterilization. Feed high-quality koi pellets (high protein in warm months, wheat-germ-based in cooler months). Monitor water quality meticulously: ammonia and nitrite at zero at all times. Partial water changes of 10–20% weekly. Protect from predators with netting. Cease feeding below 8°C.
