Synodontis lucipinnis
Also known as: Tanganyika Dwarf Squeaker, Lucipinnis Synodontis
Origin: Lake Tanganyika
Synodontis lucipinnis is a small Lake Tanganyika endemic that is often sold alongside or confused with S. petricola, though it can be distinguished by its slightly smaller adult size and subtly different spotting pattern. It thrives in hard, alkaline rift-lake conditions and is one of the more sociable Synodontis species, genuinely benefiting from group housing.
Like other Tanganyika endemics it appreciates a well-structured rockscape offering plenty of caves and crevices to shelter in during daylight hours. It becomes noticeably more active and visible in the evening and early morning, engaging in playful chasing and mock sparring with conspecifics.
Tank-bred specimens are available and are recommended over wild-caught fish both for hardiness and conservation reasons.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 7.5–9.0, hard (GH 10–20, KH 5–15); Tanganyika-specific mineral additives beneficial. Tank: 120 L minimum; rocky caves and flat slate ledges; moderate to strong filtration. Feeding: Quality sinking pellets, catfish wafers, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp; varied diet promotes best colouration. Breeding: Cave spawner; brood parasitism possible when cichlids present; eggs hatch in 48–72 hours. Compatibility: Peaceful with shell-dwellers and small Tanganyikan cichlids; groups of 4+ encouraged.
