Mastacembelus moorii
Also known as: Tanganyika Spiny Eel, Moorii Eel
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, East Africa
Mastacembelus moorii is one of the very few spiny eels adapted to the hard, alkaline, and mineral-rich conditions of Lake Tanganyika. Unlike the vast majority of its congeners which require soft to moderately hard water, this species thrives at pH values above 7.5 and up to 9.0, placing it firmly in the domain of Tanganyikan cichlid keepers.
In Lake Tanganyika it inhabits rocky and sandy shore areas, burrowing into the sediment between rock formations. In the aquarium it requires a sandy substrate and rocky decor typical of a Tanganyikan setup, though it must not be able to escape through any gap between the rocks and the tank rim.
Feeding follows standard spiny eel expectations: live and frozen invertebrates, earthworms, and prawns are eagerly consumed. This species is a rare and genuinely valuable addition to a Tanganyikan community tank, coexisting well with cichlids and synodontis catfish that share its water chemistry requirements.
Water: Hard and alkaline, pH 7.5–9.0, temperature 24–27°C, GH 10–20, KH 8–18. Tank: Minimum 200 L, sandy substrate, rocky Tanganyikan decor, sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, prawns, bloodworm, mussel, and sinking pellets. Breeding: Not documented; spawning triggers unknown. Compatibility: Tanganyikan cichlids and synodontis of appropriate size; avoid small species.
