Synodontis tanganaicus
Also known as: Tanganyika Squeaker, Tanganyika Synodontis
Origin: Lake Tanganyika
Synodontis tanganaicus is one of several mochokids endemic to Lake Tanganyika, sharing that lake's highly alkaline, mineral-rich waters with cichlids such as Tropheus and Neolamprologus. It is a medium-built species with subtle spotted markings and a tendency toward shyness in captivity, spending much of its time within rocky shelters.
With time and patience it becomes more visible in well-designed rift-lake aquariums, particularly if the rockscape provides numerous caves at varying heights and the tank is not overstocked with aggressive species. Groups of two to three are often more confident than solitary individuals.
Feeding is unproblematic; this species readily accepts quality sinking foods and will graze on algal and biofilm growth between meals.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 7.5–9.0, hard (GH 10–20, KH 5–15); Tanganyika-specific buffer recommended. Tank: 180 L minimum; multi-level Rocky aquascape; open sandy areas; moderate to strong circulation. Feeding: Sinking pellets, Spirulina wafers, frozen mysis and krill; will graze biofilm from rocks. Breeding: Cave spawner; seldom bred in captivity; more likely in dedicated rift-lake breeding setups. Compatibility: Peaceful with Tanganyikan cichlids; mild competition with other cave-dwelling catfish.
