Caridina serrata var.
Also known as: Tangerine Tiger Shrimp, Orange Tiger Shrimp
Origin: Captive bred (Caridina serrata lineage)
The Tangerine Tiger Shrimp is a colourful Caridina serrata morph displaying vivid tangerine-orange colouration overlaid with the characteristic darker tiger-stripe banding of the serrata species. Unlike standard Tiger Shrimp, the orange background colour replaces the typical yellowish-brown, creating a dramatically brighter and more tropical appearance.
The Tangerine Tiger is intermediate in difficulty — it requires somewhat softer and more acidic water than Neocaridina species but is more tolerant than top-grade Taiwan Bee or SSS Caridina. It is an excellent stepping stone for hobbyists wanting to move beyond Neocaridina without committing to the most demanding Caridina care regimes.
This morph breeds readily when water parameters are appropriate and forms attractive colonies where the variation in orange intensity among individuals adds visual dynamism.
Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.0–7.0, GH 4–8, KH 1–4; soft water preferable; can use quality tap or light RO blend. Tank: minimum 20 L with fine substrate; moss and leaf litter ideal for natural grazing habitat. Feeding: biofilm, algae wafers, snowflake food, shrimp pellets; remove uneaten portions after a few hours. Breeding: moderate; females carry 20–30 eggs; offspring show variable stripe and colour intensity. Compatibility: keep with other Tiger shrimp variants; avoid mixing with Neocaridina to prevent hybridisation.
