Tanichthys kuehnei
Also known as: Kuehne's White Cloud
Origin: Southern China
Tanichthys kuehnei is one of the more recently described members of its genus, originating from hill streams in southern China. It closely resembles other Tanichthys species, displaying the characteristic iridescent lateral stripe and colourful fin patterning that defines the group. Its precise natural range is more restricted than T. albonubes, and it remains uncommon in the hobby, circulating mainly among specialist breeders and cyprinid enthusiasts. In the aquarium it requires cool, well-oxygenated conditions similar to those needed by all Tanichthys species. A temperature range of 15–22 °C is appropriate. It is peaceful and undemanding, accepting standard small aquarium foods, and breeds using the same egg-scattering method as the White Cloud Mountain Minnow. An interesting addition for those wishing to explore beyond the standard Tanichthys offerings.
Water: Temperature 15–22 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 4–12; cool and well-oxygenated; no heating required. Tank: 30 L minimum; planted cool-water setup; gentle filtration; secure lid. Feeding: Small flake, micro-pellet, frozen daphnia and cyclops; readily accepts most small foods. Breeding: Egg-scatterer over fine plants or mops; fry straightforward to raise on micro-foods. Compatibility: Peaceful with all temperate community fish; suits white cloud mixes.
