Tanichthys micagemmae
Also known as: Vietnamese White Cloud
Origin: Central Vietnam
Tanichthys micagemmae, known as the Vietnamese White Cloud, is a close relative of the classic White Cloud Mountain Minnow discovered in the streams of central Vietnam. It shares the brilliant lateral neon stripe of T. albonubes but is typically slightly more slender, with vivid red colouration in the unpaired fins. Like its Chinese relative it inhabits cool, clear hill streams with good oxygen levels. In the aquarium it requires the same cool-water conditions, thriving at 16–22 °C. A heated tank is unsuitable for long-term keeping. It is a peaceful, active schooler that does well in groups of six or more in a planted community setup with other temperate species. Diet is undemanding: small flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen foods are all accepted. It breeds readily using the same methods as T. albonubes.
Water: Temperature 16–22 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 4–12; cool, well-oxygenated; avoid heated tanks. Tank: 30 L minimum; planted temperate setup; fine-leaved plants and gentle flow; secure lid. Feeding: Small flake, micro-pellet, frozen daphnia and cyclops; varied diet maintains colour. Breeding: Prolific egg-scatterer; spawns over Java moss or spawning mop; fry easy to raise. Compatibility: Peaceful with all temperate community fish; ideal with white clouds and small loaches.
