Hypancistrus sp. (L016)
Also known as: Tapajos Dwarf Pleco, L016 Pleco, Tapajós Miniature Pleco
Origin: Rio Tapajós, Brazil
The Tapajos Dwarf Pleco (L016) is a petite loricariid from the crystal-clear, sandy shallows of the Rio Tapajós in Pará state, Brazil. Its relatively small adult size and intricate fine-spotted patterning make it a prized species for dedicated nano and species aquariums. Like most small plecos it is shy and cryptic, spending much of the day concealed in caves or under driftwood.
L016 thrives in slightly acidic, soft, warm water. Driftwood is an essential component of the setup, providing both nutrition and shelter. The diet should include algae wafers, blanched zucchini and spinach, and occasional protein supplements to maintain optimal colouration and health.
Because of its small size, L016 can be housed in compact aquariums of 60 litres or more. It pairs well with small peaceful species such as pencilfish, nano tetras, and small rasboras. Avoid large or boisterous tankmates that may stress or outcompete this delicate species.
Water: pH 5.8–7.0, temperature 25–29°C, GH 1–8, KH 1–4; soft, slightly acidic conditions preferred. Tank: 60 L minimum; fine sand substrate, driftwood, leaf litter, and small caves. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, blanched vegetables, driftwood grazing, occasional small frozen foods. Breeding: Cave spawner; possible in captivity in dedicated species tanks with proper conditioning. Compatibility: Excellent with small peaceful species; avoid large or aggressive tankmates.
