Geophagus sp. 'Tapajos Orange Head'
Also known as: Tapajós Orange Head, Orange Head Eartheater, Red Head Tapajós
Origin: Brazil (Rio Tapajós drainage)
Geophagus sp. 'Tapajos Orange Head' is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular eartheaters in the aquarium hobby. Originating from the crystal-clear waters of the Rio Tapajós drainage in Pará, Brazil, it displays a deep orange-to-red blaze across the entire head contrasting brilliantly with metallic turquoise-green body iridescence and yellow-orange fin margins. This colouration rivals many marine fish. A delayed mouthbrooder and prolific sand sifter, it forms cohesive social groups in clear, warm, moderately soft water. Pristine water quality is essential; it reacts quickly to elevated nitrates with faded colour and increased stress. Fine sand at least 6 cm deep, open swimming areas, and a well-sized group of five or more are the key elements for success.
Water: Soft; pH 5.5–6.8, temperature 26–30 °C, nitrates below 15 ppm. Tank: 250 L+; fine deep sand, open floor, minimal tall plants. Feeding: Sinking pellets, artemia, daphnia, mysis, and varied frozen foods. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; group spawning; excellent nutrition improves fry success. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with large, calm tetras and non-nippy catfish.
