Melanotaenia splendida tatei
Also known as: Tate's Rainbowfish, Desert Rainbowfish
Origin: Australia (inland Queensland)
Melanotaenia splendida tatei is an inland Australian subspecies of the M. splendida complex found in remote river systems of central and western Queensland. It is adapted to survive in environments subject to significant seasonal variation — flooding and near-drying — and has consequently developed exceptional hardiness and adaptability. In the aquarium this translates to a species that is highly forgiving of suboptimal conditions, making it an excellent choice for beginners.
Mature males develop an attractive silver-blue body with reddish scale edges along the upper flanks and vivid yellow-orange fins. They are not as intensely coloured as some other rainbowfish but make up for this with their spirited activity and hardiness. Groups of six or more produce the most engaging display behaviour.
M. splendida tatei breeds readily and prolifically, often spawning without intervention in a well-planted aquarium. The species' inland origin means it is more tolerant of alkaline and somewhat hard water than many other rainbowfish.
Water: pH 7.0–8.5, temperature 20–28°C, moderately hard to hard; highly adaptable and forgiving. Tank: Minimum 150 L; standard planted community setup; suits subtropical and tropical temperatures. Feeding: Accepts all standard aquarium foods; varied diet improves finnage colouration. Breeding: Prolific egg scatterer on plants or mops; breeds readily without special intervention. Compatibility: Excellent with all peaceful community fish; one of the most community-friendly rainbowfish.
