Apistogramma sp. 'Tefe'
Also known as: Tefé Apisto, Tefe Dwarf Cichlid, Orange-belly Apistogramma
Origin: Brazil
Apistogramma sp. 'Tefe' hails from the Tefé region along the middle Solimões river in Brazil, an area renowned among cichlid enthusiasts as the origin of spectacular discus and geophagine populations. The Tefe apisto matches its famous neighbors in visual impact: males display rich red-orange ventral and anterior coloration, iridescent blue-green scale rows, and an impressive body size for an undescribed form.
This form inhabits the complex mosaic of whitewater, blackwater, and mixed environments around Tefé, and tolerates slightly broader water conditions than extreme blackwater specialists. It is nonetheless a demanding species requiring soft, warm, acidic water to display its full color and breed.
Apistogramma sp. 'Tefe' is a flagship undescribed form that generates significant collector interest and is being actively propagated by specialist breeders across Europe.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 4.5–6.0, temperature 25–29°C. Tank: 80 L minimum; sand substrate, leaf litter, and large driftwood for cave territories. Feeding: Varied live/frozen diet; quality pellets accepted; robust appetite. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards vigorously; advanced keeper recommended. Compatibility: Very peaceful, small mid-water dither fish; no boisterous tankmates.
