Teleogramma depressum
Also known as: Depressed Eel-cichlid, Flat Rapids Cichlid
Origin: Congo River rapids
Teleogramma depressum takes the flattened body form seen in all Teleogramma to its logical extreme — it is one of the most dorsoventrally compressed cichlids known, with a profile that allows it to slide between rock faces that other fish cannot enter. Found in the Congo River rapids, it is less commonly encountered in the hobby than T. brichardi but shares the same care requirements and fascinating biology.
As with T. brichardi, breeding females show brighter nuptial colouration than males, and the female guards the egg clutch deep within a narrow rock crevice. The species is carnivorous and requires live or high-quality frozen invertebrate foods for long-term health.
Setting up an appropriate tank requires significant investment in water movement equipment. A strong powerhead, smooth slate or flat boulder arrangements, and excellent water quality are non-negotiable for this advanced species.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–15, KH 3–10); extremely high flow and oxygenation. Tank: 100 L; very flat rock and slate crevices against maximum current — the narrower the crevice the better. Feeding: Live and frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and small crustaceans; very reluctant to accept dry food. Breeding: Cavity-spawner in very narrow crevices; female guards eggs — species tank essential. Compatibility: Species tank only.
