Telmatochromis temporalis
Also known as: Temporalis Cichlid, Striped Telmatochromis
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Telmatochromis temporalis is a robust small cichlid from the rocky littoral zone of Lake Tanganyika, characterised by two bold horizontal stripes on a pale cream background. Males are larger than females and defend territories around shells or rock crevices with considerable determination.
This species is one of the hardier and more manageable Tanganyika cichlids, making it accessible to intermediate-level aquarists. It breeds readily in aquarium conditions, producing cohesive family units where both parents guard the spawning site aggressively.
T. temporalis can be kept as a pair or in small groups in a well-structured rocky aquarium and is a good companion fish for Julies, Neolamprologus, or shell-dwelling cichlids.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–18, KH 8–16; tolerant of a range of conditions within these parameters. Tank: 120 L minimum for a pair; rockwork with shells and crevices for breeding. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts quality flake and pellets; frozen Mysis and bloodworm. Breeding: Cave or shell spawner; female guards eggs and fry; male defends territory perimeter. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; suitable with Julidochromis, Neolamprologus, and other robust Tanganyika species.
