Telmatochromis temporalis
Also known as: Dwarf Temporalis, Mini Temporalis
Origin: Lake Tanganyika
The Dwarf variant of Telmatochromis temporalis is a naturally occurring small-bodied form collected from select localities in Lake Tanganyika where it rarely exceeds 5 cm in total length — significantly smaller than the 8–10 cm typical of standard temporalis. Its compact size makes it accessible for aquarists who want a Telmatochromis without committing to a large aquarium.
Behaviourally it mirrors other temporalis forms: a strongly pair-bonded species that defends a cave, crevice, or large shell as a spawning site. The female incubates the eggs and guards wrigglers while the male patrols the territory perimeter. Both sexes are attentive parents and will aggressively defend the site against fish several times their own size.
The Dwarf temporalis appreciates a 50 L aquarium with a mix of rocky caves and large shells, fine sand substrate, and hard alkaline water. Its relatively small mouth means it should be offered appropriately sized frozen foods — Artemia, Cyclops, and finely crushed pellets rather than larger Mysis or Bloodworm chunks.
Water: pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–20, KH 8–16, temperature 24–27 °C. Tank: 50 L; mix of flat rocks and large shells; fine sand substrate; moderate filtration. Feeding: Frozen Artemia, Cyclops, micro pellets; sized appropriately for small mouth; twice daily. Breeding: Cave or shell spawner; biparental defence; fry free-swimming after ~10 days. Compatibility: Compatible with Cyprichromis; avoid large aggressive Lamprologines.
