Crenicichla tendybaguassu
Also known as: Tendybaguassu Pike Cichlid, Great Pike Cichlid, Upper Paraná Giant Pike
Origin: Upper Rio Paraná headwaters, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil
Crenicichla tendybaguassu is a large, imposing pike cichlid from the upper Rio Paraná headwaters in Mato Grosso do Sul, described relatively recently and still rarely encountered in European aquariology. Its name derives from the Guaraní language, meaning roughly 'great pike' — an apt description of a fish that reaches 35 cm and commands attention in any aquarium large enough to house it.
The species inhabits large river channels and floodplain pools of the upper Paraná, an environment of moderate to warm temperatures, neutral pH, and varying hardness depending on season and locality. It is not a blackwater specialist and adapts reasonably well to the moderately hard, neutral conditions of Central European tap water — a significant practical advantage for a large Crenicichla.
Owning C. tendybaguassu is a long-term commitment: 500 L minimum, exceptional filtration, and large prey items several times per week. The reward is one of the most impressive large cichlid display fish available in the hobby, a genuine conversation piece in any serious cichlid collection.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 22–28°C; moderate hardness acceptable; exceptional filtration mandatory. Tank: 500 L minimum; very large driftwood, substantial rock shelter zones, deep sandy substrate. Feeding: Large prey items 2–3 times per week; frozen fish, prawns, earthworms; large cichlid pellets. Breeding: Very large cave spawner; requires exceptional space and water quality. Compatibility: Species tank only; too large and aggressive for any safe companion.
