Mystus tengara
Also known as: Tengara Mystus, Tengra Catfish
Origin: South Asia (India, Nepal — Ganges basin)
Mystus tengara is a relatively small bagrid catfish found in the Ganges drainage system of India and Nepal, where it inhabits rivers, streams, and ponds with both clear and turbid water. It is banded rather than striped, with a pattern of irregular dark marks along its flanks on a pale background. Its modest adult size of around 15 cm makes it one of the more practically managed Mystus species for the home aquarium.
In the aquarium, Mystus tengara is active and bold for a catfish, readily visible during the day and actively foraging across the substrate and lower water column. It is an omnivore that will accept a wide variety of foods including sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, vegetable wafers, and occasional plant matter. Its adaptable nature and modest size make it more accessible than many other bagrid species.
This species can be semi-aggressive toward slow, long-finned companions and may compete assertively for food. It does best in community setups with other active, robust fish of similar size. Medium tetras, barbs, and robust loaches make good tankmates. Feed twice daily with a varied diet to keep it in optimal condition and reduce inter-specimen aggression.
Water: 20–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15). Tank: 120 L minimum; sand or gravel; driftwood caves; moderate flow. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworms, vegetable wafers; twice daily feeding. Breeding: Not regularly bred in captivity; seasonal trigger required. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; best with medium active community fish; avoid delicate long-finned species.
