Zoogoneticus tequila
Also known as: Tequila Splitfin, Tequila Fish
Origin: Jalisco, Mexico
Zoogoneticus tequila was declared extinct in the wild in 1996 but has been successfully kept alive by hobbyist and institutional breeding programmes. A reintroduction programme using captive-bred fish is ongoing in Mexico. Males develop attractive golden-orange iridescence at the caudal peduncle and dorsal fin during breeding condition.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard. Tank: 80L minimum, planted tank with swimming space; tolerates algae growth. Feeding: Omnivore — algae, plant matter, high-quality pellets, occasional frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: Peaceful relative to other goodeids; males display without extreme aggression. Compatibility: Suitable with other goodeid livebearers or robust community species.
