Anostomus intermedius
Also known as: Ternetzi Headstander, Intermediate Headstander
Origin: Amazon basin, Brazil
Anostomus intermedius — sold in the trade as the Ternetzi or Intermediate Headstander — is a moderately sized Anostomus reaching around 12 cm, displaying attractive brown-and-gold mottled patterning along its flanks with faint longitudinal striping and subtle red fin accents. It is native to the Amazon basin of Brazil and is generally considered more peaceful than the larger Anostomus species.
This species adapts well to aquariums with moderate water flow, driftwood, and robust planting. It is less aggressive towards conspecifics than A. anostomus in adequate space, making it a more practical choice for community setups with other large South American fish. Its oblique head-down feeding posture as it grazes algae from surfaces adds considerable interest to any large display tank.
Diet should centre on plant material: algae wafers, spirulina flake, and blanched vegetables, with frozen foods offered for protein supplementation. It is a hardy and long-lived species when its basic requirements are met.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15, KH 1–8). Tank: 160 L minimum; planted with hardy species or artificial decor; driftwood; moderate flow. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina flake, blanched courgette and spinach; frozen brine shrimp and daphnia. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful towards unrelated species; keep in groups of 5+ to manage intraspecific behaviour.
