Gymnogeophagus terrapurpura
Also known as: Purple Eartheater, Terra Purpura
Origin: Uruguay (coastal river drainages)
Gymnogeophagus terrapurpura is a remarkable subtropical eartheater described from coastal river drainages of Uruguay. It is one of the most colourful Gymnogeophagus species, with dominant males developing vivid purple-violet iridescence on the flanks and unpaired fins that rivals many tropical cichlids. The species has a strong seasonal biology: it requires a winter cooling period (down to 16–18 °C) to prime reproductive behaviour, followed by warming to simulate spring and summer. This makes it ideal for aquarists interested in seasonal cycling. Fine sand substrate and open foraging areas replicate the sandy-bottomed coastal streams it inhabits. A delayed mouthbrooder, it is peaceful and compatible with temperate South American characins and catfish. High water quality and moderate hardness are acceptable.
Water: Moderate hardness tolerated; pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 18–26 °C seasonally. Tank: 120 L+; fine sand, moderate decoration, open space. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, tubifex, daphnia, artemia. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; cool period required to trigger spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with temperate tetras and catfish.
