Gymnogeophagus terrapurpura
Also known as: Coastal Purple Eartheater, Uruguay Coastal Terrapurpura
Origin: Uruguay (coastal river drainages)
This coastal Uruguay population of Gymnogeophagus terrapurpura inhabits short, fast-flowing coastal rivers that drain directly into the Atlantic. It represents one of the most colourful known populations of the species, with dominant males displaying particularly intense violet-purple flank iridescence under good lighting. Like all G. terrapurpura, it has a pronounced seasonal biology driven by strong temperature cycling: cool winters (14–18 °C) prepare the gonads, while warming to 22–26 °C in spring-summer triggers spawning. This makes it ideally suited to subtropical aquarium setups with seasonal temperature management. Fine sand, open areas, and moderate water hardness are all that is required beyond the temperature regime. A rewarding species for hobbyists willing to embrace a seasonal management approach.
Water: Moderate hardness; pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 14–26 °C seasonally managed. Tank: 120 L+; fine sand, open areas, minimal but functional décor. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, tubifex, artemia. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; cool-season drop mandatory for spawning induction. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with temperate South American species tolerating the same range.
