Polypterus teugelsi
Also known as: Teugels' Bichir
Origin: Africa
Polypterus teugelsi was formally described only in 2004 and remains one of the rarest bichirs in the hobby. It originates from the rivers of Cameroon and is thought to inhabit slow, vegetated waters. Its pale colouration and scattered dark markings make it immediately recognisable to experienced polypterid keepers.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft, slightly acidic water preferred. Tank: Minimum 250L, well-planted or driftwood-rich, fine dark substrate, tight lid. Feeding: Carnivore; live worms, frozen bloodworm and prawn, quality sinking carnivore pellets. Behaviour: Peaceful and unobtrusive; spends most daylight hours sheltering under wood or rock. Compatibility: Compatible with robust mid-sized to large fish; avoid fin-nippers and very small species.
