Herichthys cyanoguttatus × Vieja sp. hybrid
Also known as: Texas × Vieja Hybrid, Texas Vieja Cichlid
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
This hybrid cichlid results from deliberate crosses between Herichthys cyanoguttatus and members of the Vieja genus, most commonly Vieja synspila or Vieja melanura. The resulting fish displays an interesting blend of traits from both parent species: the dense iridescent spotting of the Texas Cichlid combined with the broad colour patches, deeper body, and larger adult size characteristic of large Vieja species.
Individual hybrids vary considerably in their appearance depending on which Vieja species was used as the parent and the specific generation of the cross. F1 hybrids tend to be large, robust, and fast-growing — exhibiting the hybrid vigour common to first-generation cichlid crosses. Later-generation fish may stabilise toward certain trait combinations.
The Texas × Vieja hybrid is kept by enthusiasts of large New World cichlids who appreciate the combination of impressive size, vivid colouration, and the personality traits shared by both parent species. It requires the same large aquarium setup as other large cichlid species.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard; both parent species tolerate wide ranges so the hybrid is adaptable. Tank: Minimum 400L; substantial rockwork for territory definition; powerful filtration for large bioload. Feeding: Omnivore; quality large cichlid pellets, frozen foods, earthworms; will excavate substrate. Breeding: Large open substrate spawner; aggressive parental pair; remove other tankmates during spawning. Compatibility: Very aggressive; keep alone or with very large, robust cichlids only.
