Laetacara thayeri
Origin: Brazil (central Amazon basin)
Laetacara thayeri is a mid-sized and strikingly patterned dwarf cichlid from the central Amazon basin, displaying a broad dark lateral stripe, a checkered flank pattern, and beautiful iridescent blue spot markings on the head. Slightly larger and arguably more colorful than its congener L. dorsigera, it shares the same exceptionally peaceful community temperament. Breeding pairs form intense bonds and guard their eggs and fry with considerable dedication, making spawning fascinating to observe.
Provide a well-planted aquarium with coconut caves, flat stones, or ceramic pots for spawning. Soft, slightly acidic water brings out the best coloration. Feed a varied diet of quality micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, Artemia, and daphnia. Pairs can be kept in community tanks with small peaceful fish during and after spawning as long as tank mates do not harass the pair.
