Thayeri Tetra

Gymnocorymbus thayeri is a medium-sized, elegant characin from the Orinoco and upper Amazon systems. It is closely related to the popular Black Widow Tetra (G. ternetzi) but differs in its more elongated body form and the softer, less sharply defined black vertical bars that run across the rear body. The overall effect is of a more graceful, less strongly contrasted fish that suits natural aquascape designs.

This species is peaceful, adaptable, and straightforward to keep in a wide range of water conditions. It schools attractively in groups of eight or more and is an excellent community fish. Its larger size compared to most tetras makes it a good mid-sized species to anchor a tetra community.

Feeding is easy with any quality aquarium food. This is a recommended choice for aquarists wanting something similar to but more unusual than the common Black Widow Tetra.

Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to medium (GH 3–18, KH 2–10). Tank: 100 L minimum; open mid-water swimming with planted background; versatile. Feeding: Quality flake, pellets, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm, and daphnia. Breeding: Egg-scatterer in fine plants; condition with live foods; easy to breed. Compatibility: Excellent peaceful community fish with all similarly sized species.
