Theraps bocourti
Also known as: Bocourt's Cichlid
Origin: Mexico, Guatemala
Theraps bocourti is found in the Usumacinta and Grijalva river systems of Mexico and Guatemala, where it occupies rocky sections of the river and feeds on algae and aufwuchs. Mature specimens develop striking blue iridescence on the scale edges, creating a spangled appearance that is particularly attractive under strong aquarium lighting. The species is robust and proportionate, with a slightly less deep body than some congeners.
This species requires similar care to other Theraps: well-oxygenated, flowing water; a rocky aquascape; and a diet heavily weighted toward vegetable matter. It is moderately aggressive and will defend territories from other similarly sized fish, but pairs generally coexist without severe conflict in a sufficiently large aquarium.
T. bocourti is more regularly available in the hobby than some other Theraps species and represents an accessible entry point into this fascinating genus of rheophilic cichlids.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18, KH 3–10; well-oxygenated, moderate flow essential. Tank: 350 L minimum; rocky substrate, sand base, strong filtration; provide grazing surfaces. Feeding: Omnivore — spirulina pellets primary, with frozen mysis and meaty foods occasionally. Breeding: Flat-rock or pit spawner; both parents defend actively; medium-sized clutches. Compatibility: Suitable with other mid-size robust CA cichlids; requires adequate space and rocky territory markers.
