Theraps godmanni
Also known as: Godman's Cichlid
Origin: Mexico, Guatemala (Usumacinta)
Theraps godmanni inhabits the Usumacinta River drainage in Mexico and Guatemala, where it clings to life in fast-flowing, oxygen-rich rocky sections of the river. It is a lithophilous species adapted to hard substrates, feeding primarily on algae and biofilm scraped from rock surfaces with its specialized dentition. Its deep, compressed body and pronounced dorsal arch are adaptations for life in swift currents.
In the aquarium, T. godmanni requires high oxygenation and moderate to strong water flow to replicate its rheophilic nature. It should be provided with a rocky substrate and numerous large stones to establish territories and serve as grazing surfaces. The species is a strong digger that will rearrange substrate regularly.
A diet with a strong herbivorous component — spirulina, algae wafers, blanched greens — is essential for long-term health and coloration. The species can be kept in pairs or small groups in sufficiently large aquaria with good territory distribution.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–20, KH 4–12; high oxygenation and moderate to strong flow essential. Tank: 400 L minimum; large rock arrangements, sand substrate, minimal planting; strong filtration. Feeding: Herbivore — spirulina pellets, algae wafers, blanched spinach, zucchini, peas as staples. Breeding: Substrate spawner on flat rocks; biparental care; brood defended vigorously. Compatibility: Other rheophilic CA cichlids of similar size; avoid slow-water or delicate species.
