Theraps irregularis
Also known as: Irregular Cichlid, Irregularis Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Theraps irregularis is a medium-sized cichlid endemic to the Usumacinta river system of Mexico and Guatemala, one of the most species-rich river systems for cichlids in the Americas. Its name reflects the irregular pattern of spots and blotches distributed along its flanks, which varies considerably between individuals and populations. The body colouration is olive-grey with a metallic sheen, and breeding fish develop increased contrast in their markings. A hardy species that copes well with typical Central American aquarium conditions, it is a solid choice for keepers building a representative Usumacinta cichlid community.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard (GH 8–18). Tank: Minimum 300L; mixed rocky and woody décor; sand or gravel substrate. Feeding: Omnivore; varied diet of cichlid pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable matter. Breeding: Substrate spawner on flat rocks or in caves; moderately aggressive toward tankmates during breeding. Compatibility: With other mid-sized Central American cichlids; avoid very small or timid species.
