Theraps nebulifer
Also known as: Nebulous Cichlid, Nebulifer Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Theraps nebulifer inhabits fast-flowing, often turbid rivers across southern Mexico and northern Guatemala. Its robust, muscular body is adapted to strong current, and its colouration — a grey-brown base with a fine dark speckling and bold lateral blotch — provides excellent camouflage against rocky river bottoms. In the aquarium it appreciates high oxygen levels, strong filtration, and regular water changes to maintain the vigorous conditions of its natural habitat. A hardy and rewarding species for keepers who enjoy replicating mesoamerican rheophilic biotopes.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.2, moderately hard (GH 8–20). Tank: Minimum 300L with powerheads for flow simulation; rocky substrate; caves and flat rock spawning sites. Feeding: Omnivore; sinking cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, krill, and blanched vegetables. Breeding: Spawns under rocks or in caves; both parents defend territory firmly. Compatibility: With similarly sized robust Central American cichlids; avoid timid species.
