Theraps wesseli
Also known as: Wessel's Cichlid, Wesseli Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Theraps wesseli is a rheophilic cichlid from fast-flowing highland rivers in Chiapas, Mexico. Its streamlined, compressed body is a clear adaptation to life in strong current. The flanks bear a pattern of blue iridescent spots that become most vivid in mature, well-conditioned males, making it one of the more attractive Theraps species. It is closely associated with rocky substrates where it feeds on algae, biofilm, and small invertebrates. Strong current, high oxygen levels, and hard alkaline water are essential to replicate its natural habitat and maintain the species in peak health.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.2, hard (GH 12–22); strong flow and high oxygen are essential. Tank: Minimum 280L with powerheads; rocky substrate and hiding spots; minimal or no live plants. Feeding: Omnivore; spirulina pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworm and daphnia, and biofilm. Breeding: Rock crevice or understone spawner; both parents guard territory with vigour in strong flow. Compatibility: With other rheophilic Central American cichlids; avoid slow-water or soft-water species.
