Lepidocephalichthys thermalis
Also known as: Thermalis Loach, Thermal Spiny Loach, Indian Spiny Loach
Origin: India, Sri Lanka
Lepidocephalichthys thermalis is a compact, mottled spiny loach native to India and Sri Lanka, found in a wide variety of habitats ranging from cool hill streams to warm lowland rivers and even thermal springs — explaining its species epithet. This thermal flexibility makes it one of the most adaptable loaches available in the hobby.
In the aquarium, Thermalis Loach is a lively, engaging bottom-dweller that spends its time sifting through fine substrate and exploring every corner of the tank. It is highly compatible with other peaceful community species and does well in both tropical and coldwater setups, depending on its source population. A group of five or more is recommended to bring out the best behaviour.
Diet consists of sinking micro foods: pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm, and small live invertebrates. Its wide thermal tolerance and undemanding nature make it an accessible choice for loach keepers of all experience levels. Fine substrate protection of its delicate belly is the most important husbandry consideration.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 20–28°C; adaptable but stable parameters preferred. Tank: 60 L minimum; fine sand substrate essential, plant cover, cave hides. Feeding: Sinking micro pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm, small live invertebrates. Breeding: Rarely documented; suspected to scatter eggs in substrate. Compatibility: Peaceful and versatile; excellent with most community fish.
