Trichogaster labiosa
Also known as: Thick-lip Gourami, Thick-lipped Gourami
Origin: Myanmar
Trichogaster labiosa is distinguished from other gouramis by its noticeably thick, fleshy lips adapted for picking invertebrates from surfaces. Found in slow-moving, vegetated waters of Myanmar, it displays attractive red-orange striping on a silvery base. Males may occasionally spar but are generally manageable in a well-planted aquarium.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: 80L minimum, dense planting with open swimming areas, floating plants. Feeding: Omnivore — picks at biofilm and small invertebrates; accepts pellets, flake, frozen foods. Behaviour: Males occasionally semi-aggressive; generally peaceful toward other species. Compatibility: Good with medium community fish; avoid fin-nippers.
