Thorichthys aureus
Also known as: Blue Flash Cichlid, Golden Firemouth
Origin: Guatemala, Honduras
Thorichthys aureus is among the most strikingly beautiful members of its genus, displaying a particularly intense blue iridescence on the flanks that earns it the common name Blue Flash. Native to the Motagua, Ulua, and associated river systems in Guatemala and Honduras, it inhabits warm, moderately turbid lowland rivers. A prominent black spot on the lateral line, combined with the blue spangling, creates a highly attractive pattern.
Care is almost identical to the more commonly available Firemouth Cichlid — the same water parameters, diet, and tank structure apply. T. aureus is slightly less common in the trade but is regularly offered by specialist cichlid dealers. It is a natural substitute for hobbyists who appreciate the Thorichthys body plan but want something slightly less familiar.
Breeding behavior mirrors that of T. meeki: shallow pit or flat-rock spawning with strong biparental care. The species is easy to breed in captivity and makes a rewarding project for hobbyists interested in observing cichlid parental behavior in detail.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–18, KH 2–10; soft to moderately hard water; warm temperatures essential. Tank: 180 L minimum; sand substrate, rocky caves, plants tolerated; moderate flow. Feeding: Omnivore — medium pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia; varied diet enhances blue coloration. Breeding: Shallow pit or flat-rock spawner; biparental care; 100–400 eggs; fry easy to raise. Compatibility: Medium-sized cichlids and robust community fish; less aggressive than many CA cichlids.
