Thorichthys aureus Blue Flash Cichlid

Thorichthys aureus, the Blue Flash or Golden Cichlid, is a handsome Central American species from Guatemala and Belize. Closely related to the Firemouth, it is somewhat less aggressive and displays dazzling electric-blue lateral spots on a golden-ochre body. A substrate spawner with strong parental care; both parents guard territory and fry vigorously. More suitable for moderately sized community tanks than its fierier cousins. A rewarding cichlid for hobbyists ready to step beyond the Firemouth.

Pair in 120+ L. Hard water, pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 24–28 °C. Sandy or fine gravel substrate. Feed cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, and live foods. Aggressive during breeding; remove tankmates or provide large tank with visual barriers.
