Thorichthys callolepis
Also known as: Thorichthys callolepis
Origin: Central America
Thorichthys callolepis is found in clear lowland rivers of the Usumacinta basin in southern Mexico and Guatemala. It shares the typical Thorichthys body plan with a laterally compressed profile, pointed snout, and vibrant scale iridescence. Males develop extended dorsal and anal fins and display intense blue-green spangling during breeding. Though less commonly available than its relatives, it is highly regarded among cichlid specialists.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness (GH 8–18). Tank: 200L minimum; soft sandy substrate for foraging; decorate with wood and stone caves. Feeding: Omnivore; sand-sifting omnivore diet of pellets, frozen fare, and plant material. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; pairs bond strongly and defend breeding sites with gill-flare displays. Compatibility: Suitable with other mid-sized Central American cichlids in large tanks.
