About

Thorichthys meeki is one of the most recognizable cichlids in the hobby, having been kept and bred by aquarists since the early twentieth century. Its defining feature is the brilliant red-orange coloration of the lower jaw, throat, and belly — an anatomical signal that the fish exploits during territorial disputes by flaring its gill covers dramatically to appear larger and more threatening. This display is rarely followed by actual violence, making T. meeki among the less physically dangerous of the popular Central American cichlids.

Native to the slow, warm, plant-rich waters of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, T. meeki is adapted to low-oxygen, high-temperature conditions with turbid water. In the aquarium, this translates to considerable tolerance for water quality fluctuations — a forgiving quality appreciated by beginners.

The species is an open substrate or shallow pit spawner and both parents guard the eggs and fry diligently. Clutches of 100–500 eggs are common and the fry grow quickly on nauplii and micro foods.

Care Guide

Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, GH 5–18, KH 2–10; tolerant of a wide range; avoid cold temperatures. Tank: 200 L minimum; sand substrate, rocks, some plant cover; moderate flow. Feeding: Omnivore — medium cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, vegetable flake. Breeding: Shallow pit or flat-rock spawner; excellent parents; clutches of 100–500 eggs; fry accept nauplii. Compatibility: Medium-sized community cichlids; suitable with robust tetras and barbs outside breeding.
