Acarichthys heckelii
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America

Acarichthys heckelii, the Threadfin Acara, is an elegant cichlid from the Amazon and Orinoco basins with elongated thread-like dorsal and ventral fin extensions and subtle earth-tone coloration in ochre, gray, and blue iridescent highlights. A sand sifter by nature, it forages through sandy substrate for invertebrates and organic particles. Despite its moderately large adult size, it is a peaceful community fish compatible with similar-sized non-aggressive species. Pairs form strong bonds and practice biparental brood care.
Provide a fine sandy substrate for natural sifting behavior. Plant the tank periphery to define territories while leaving open sandy areas. Feed quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, Artemia, and earthworms. Soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic water is ideal. Compatible with most similarly sized peaceful South American fish. Pairs may become modestly territorial during spawning but rarely cause serious injury.
