Geophagus pellegrini
Also known as: Threadfin Eartheater, Pellegrini's Eartheater
Origin: South America
Geophagus pellegrini is prized for the spectacular elongated fin rays that develop on mature males, combined with rich orange and blue iridescent colouration. Native to Colombia's Pacific slope drainages, it requires soft warm water to display its best colour and to breed successfully.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.2, soft water strongly preferred (1-8 dGH). Tank: Minimum 300L, fine sand, driftwood and leaf litter, moderate planting. Feeding: Sinking cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia; varied diet supports colour. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive between males; females peaceful in group hierarchy. Compatibility: Best with robust large tetras and other peaceful Geophagus species.
